There are two separate varieties of Akita: a Japanese strain, commonly called "Akita Inu" ("inu" means "dog" in Japanese), or "Japanese Akita"; and an American strain, known as the "Akita" or "American Akita".

Both have similar characteristics and are not for the faint hearted. They are large powerful dogs which can if not properly trained be aggressive to strangers. Aggression to other dogs is very common and training is absolutely vital. The Akita is eminently trainable but owner training in leadership is most important.

AKITA OBEDIENCE TRAINING

Obedience training is vital for your Akita. At York Dog School we will train your dog to a high level in obedience. We also believe that this should involve the owner at every stage and so our training is one to one with you and your dog. It’s important that your dog obeys your commands and we work with you until you are confident in controlling your dog.

Owners with obedient pets get more satisfaction and have a stronger bond with their pet. As Akitas are powerful dogs owner training is vital so that the owner can enjoy having such an energetic, and strong willed dog.

AKITA PUPPY TRAINING

Puppy

Training your new puppy should be started as soon as possible from 8 weeks. You’ll be amazed just how quickly they learn and at a very early age and it’s just fun for them and they love it!

York Dog Training School train your puppy on a 1-2-1 visit to your home in Yorkshire rather than in classes as we believe this is much more effective.

  • Toilet Training - we will show you the easiest way to toilet train your puppy
  • Crate Training - we will show you how to crate train your puppy
  • Biting - we will show you how to stop "mouthing" or biting
  • Destructive Behaviour - we will show you how to stop destructive behaviour

STOPPING BAD BEHAVIOUR BY YOUR AKITA

Some trainers believe that giving a dog treats is the best way to train but in our opinion relying on treats exclusively just does not work particularly with an Akita. Your dog may learn how to behave but only does it at because there's a treat at the end of it and many times treats just stop working. Essentially you are bribing the dog to behave properly. Our dog training solves problems with bad behaviour as this is our speciality. Many of the problems are very common and we work with your dog and just as importantly, with you at your home or on a walk, to solve any problems you may have.

  • Stop pulling on the lead
  • Stop lunging at other dogs
  • Stop barking at dogs & people
  • Stop jumping up at people
  • Stop aggression
  • Stop running away and not returning
  • Stop constant barking

Owner training is a vital part of the process and working with the owner is a major part of the training. We work extensively with the owner at the kennels to make sure that they understand the commands and can take control of their dog following the training.
